Stamped vs. Exposed Aggregate Concrete: Which Is Right for Your Patio?

Two Popular Decorative Concrete Options for Ottawa Valley Patios

When homeowners in Pembroke and the Ottawa Valley want a patio that looks great and stands up to our tough winters, two decorative concrete options consistently rise to the top: stamped concrete and exposed aggregate. Both offer excellent durability and curb appeal, but they differ in appearance, maintenance, cost, and how they handle our freeze-thaw climate.

Here is an honest comparison to help you decide which option is right for your property.

Stamped Concrete: The Look of Natural Stone

Stamped concrete is poured as a standard slab, then imprinted with textured mats while the concrete is still fresh. The result mimics the appearance of natural stone, brick, slate, or even wood — at a fraction of the cost of those materials.

Advantages of Stamped Concrete

  • Design versatility: Dozens of pattern and colour combinations available, from flagstone to cobblestone to herringbone brick
  • Seamless appearance: Because it is one continuous pour, there are no joints or gaps where weeds can grow (unlike individual pavers)
  • Colour options: Integral colour and colour hardener provide rich, customizable tones
  • Smooth, uniform surface: Easy to furnish and arrange outdoor furniture on

Considerations for Ottawa Valley Conditions

Stamped concrete requires a sealer to protect the colour and surface texture. In the Ottawa Valley, this sealer needs to be reapplied every 2-3 years. Without it, UV exposure fades the colour and freeze-thaw cycles can cause the surface to flake. The sealer also makes the surface somewhat slippery when wet, though anti-slip additives are available and recommended for patios with steps.

Additionally, the stamped pattern creates low points where water can pool. In our climate, pooling water that freezes repeatedly can accelerate surface wear. Proper grading during installation is essential to ensure drainage.

Exposed Aggregate: Natural Texture and Durability

Exposed aggregate concrete is created by pouring a standard slab, then washing or brushing away the top layer of cement paste before it fully cures to reveal the natural stone aggregate beneath. The result is a textured, speckled surface with a natural, organic look.

Advantages of Exposed Aggregate

  • Excellent traction: The exposed stone surface provides natural grip, even when wet — ideal for pool decks and walkways
  • Lower maintenance: Does not require regular sealing to maintain its appearance (though sealing is recommended to extend life)
  • Freeze-thaw performance: The textured surface handles ice and snow better than smooth or stamped finishes
  • Timeless look: The natural stone aesthetic does not go out of style

Considerations for Ottawa Valley Conditions

The aggregate selection matters. Local aggregate in the Ottawa Valley tends to include a mix of limestone, granite, and river stone, which can produce a beautiful, natural appearance. You can also specify custom aggregate blends for a more distinctive look, though this adds to the cost.

The textured surface can make snow shovelling slightly more work than a smooth surface. Some homeowners find it less comfortable for bare feet, so it may not be the best choice for a patio where children play barefoot frequently.

Cost Comparison

In the Ottawa Valley market, here is a general cost comparison for a typical patio installation:

  • Stamped concrete: Typically 15-25% more than exposed aggregate, due to the additional labour for stamping, colouring, and sealing
  • Exposed aggregate: Moderately priced — less labour-intensive than stamping but more than a standard broom finish
  • Long-term costs: Stamped concrete has higher ongoing maintenance costs (resealing every 2-3 years) compared to exposed aggregate

Both options are significantly more affordable than natural stone or interlocking pavers for the same area, while offering comparable aesthetics and superior structural performance.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose stamped concrete if you want a specific design aesthetic (like a natural stone or brick look), value a smooth surface for outdoor entertaining, and are willing to invest in regular resealing.

Choose exposed aggregate if you want a natural, low-maintenance finish, prioritize traction and safety, and prefer a surface that ages gracefully with minimal upkeep.

Both are excellent choices for Ottawa Valley properties when installed correctly with proper base preparation, air-entrained concrete, and appropriate thickness (minimum 100mm for patios).
